UNEP - independent review of IPCC

Several newspaper report about a new UNEP initiative to investigate the IPCC management of errors and, possibly also, complaints of conflicts of interests - see reports in Guardian, Telegraph, and Spiegel on-line.

According to the Telegraph "The ministers ... refused to allow Dr Pachauri to decide who would carry out the review, insisting it must be completely and demonstrably independent of the IPCC."

Members of the new panels are not known, and the success of the process will certainly depend on the skill of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) to select personalities, whose independence is truly believable.

I welcome this development very much - which I consider a partial fulfillment of a series of suggestions I had made earlier - see previous posting. -- Hans von Storch
