Misrepresentation of Bray and von Storch survey
by
Dennis Bray
On May 26, the Online version of the Wall Street Journal posted an opinion piece titled ‘The Myth of the Climate Change '97%' What is the origin of the false belief—constantly repeated—that almost all scientists agree about global warming?’ It was written by Joseph Bast and Roy Spencer. The brief bio informs the reader “Mr. Bast is president of the Heartland Institute. Dr. Spencer is a principal research scientist for the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the U.S. Science Team Leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer on NASA's Aqua satellite.” The posting contains the statement “Rigorous international surveys conducted by German scientists Dennis Bray and Hans von Storch —most recently published in Environmental Science & Policy in 2010—have found that most climate scientists disagree with the consensus on key issues such as the reliability of climate data and computer models. They do not believe that climate processes such as cloud formation and precipitation are sufficiently understood to predict future climate change.”
Since the time of publication, the opinion piece, or parts thereof, has been widely distributed, more often than not verbatim, in the blogosphere.

Deutsche Zusammenfassung von IPCC WG 3
by

Circling the Square - an experiment
by
@ReinerGrundmann
Last week the conference 'Circling the Square' took place at the University of Nottingham. I was one of the main organisers. The conference wanted to bring together speakers from the worlds of research, politics, the media, and civil society. Have a look at the list of speakers here (there is also a list of panels with abstracts, and the programme brochure can be seen here). The aim of the conference was twofold:

Another effort for bridging between camps: Climatedialogue
by

by

Lennart Bengtsson leaves advisory board of GWPF
by
Hans von Storch
In an e-mail to GWPF, Lennart Bengtsson has declared his resignation of the advisory board of GWPF. His letter reads :
"I have been put under such an enormous group pressure in recent days from all over the world that has become virtually unbearable to me. If this is going to continue I will be unable to conduct my normal work and will even start to worry about my health and safety. I see therefore no other way out therefore than resigning from GWPF. I had not expecting such an enormous world-wide pressure put at me from a community that I have been close to all my active life. Colleagues are withdrawing their support, other colleagues are withdrawing from joint authorship etc. I see no limit and end to what will happen. It is a situation that reminds me about the time of McCarthy. I would never have expecting anything similar in such an original peaceful community as meteorology. Apparently it has been transformed in recent years.
Under these situation I will be unable to contribute positively to the work of GWPF and consequently therefore I believe it is the best for me to reverse my decision to join its Board at the earliest possible time."
I am reproducing this letter with permission of Lennart Bengtsson.
See also an earlier interview with, and an article by Lennart Bengtsson here on Klimazwiebel.

Before we forget: IPCC working group 3 report published
by
@ReinerGrundmann
In case you have not noticed, the IPCC has published the report of Working Group 3, the last in the trilogy of its state-of-the-art Fifth Assessment. There seems to be an established routine in media coverage which goes by the rule that most attention should be paid to working group 'number one' (covering the physical science basis), less to 'number two' (impacts, adaptation, vulnerability), and well you guessed it, even less to 'number three' (mitigation). But the last one, published last week, seems to have led to some behind the

Rückblick auf 2004-2014
by
