Climate science - FOR AND BY THE PEOPLE?

As already announced, the 5th Bray-and-von Storch survey has been completed and the response frequencies become available. For further details of the set of five surveys refer to the first entry here on the Klimazwiebel. The sampling and the demographics will be made public with the full report, which is to be expected in a few months.

Here, and in following threads, we will present a few results of the 5th Bray-and-von Storch survey, which may be of interest for some; we certainly would like to hear the comments by the readers.

Today we discuss the responses of two questions from the block “Science and Society”, which are essentially asking if science should be “FOR the people” or “BY the people”.

Fifth Bray – von Storch International Survey of Climate Scientists completed

In the past, beginning in 1995, Dennis Bray and Hans von Storch, conducted a series of interviews with an international sample of climate scientists concerning their opinions of climate change, climate models and the social and political dimension of climate change. These interviews provided the basis for a set of questions to be used as a survey instrument of the broader climate science community.

Skeptogenesis - planned survey

Some times ago, we had a survey among climate skeptics about their opinions and about how they became skeptics. We (Rob Maris and myself) intend to repeat this survey, in principle similar to the old survey, but with improved (more accurate) questions. If somebody wants to help distributing the word about the survey, please let us know (hvonstorch@web.de). Also other comments are welcome.

We may be able to run the survey early next year.

Another survey - this time in English

The ad-hoc survey, which I had used in German among passengers on a cruise-ship  and persons involved in water management, has been used by a European company involved in risk management.

2nd reader survey on KLIMAZWIEBEL

We have again used the opportunity to survey our readers; no claims are made that this survey would lead to representative or even consistent results. Instead it is just a snapshot. Anyway, it turns out that really many of our readers are scientists - mostly natural scientist. A few decision makers and journalists are among our readers, but hardly any NGO members. And our readers read other blogs as well, in particular Climate Audit, but also Real Climate.
